Hip-Hop Classic #6: Snoop Dogg - Who Am I? (What's My Name) (Chosen by Mark Surridge)

'Who Am I? (What's My Name) is the debut solo single from Snoop Dogg's classic debut album, Doggystyle, which was released in 1993 on Death Row/Interscope. The song was a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #8 in 1994, but the album debuted at number number-one on the Billboard 200, selling 802,858 copies in its first week alone (becoming fastest-selling album ever until The Marshall Mathers LP). Dr. Dre produced the track, it features interpolation's of (Not Just) Knee Deep by Funkadelic and George Clinton's 'Atomic Dog' in its chorus - the chorus actually says "Atomic doggy dog", with original vocals mixed in. One of the most iconic Hip-Hop songs of all-time from one of the most important Hip-Hop albums ever released. What's my name...?

Mark Surridge: "While most people when asked what their favourite Hip-Hop tune is, will answer with something obscure to make themselves look intelligent and a true 'fan' - I'm not. It's like a film buff saying Citizen Kane is their favourite film, when in reality they watch and enjoy Die Hard much more. I am choosing Snoop's 'Who Am I? (What's My Name)' - not only is it one of my all-time favourite tunes off one of my favourite albums, the video is a classic too. If you don't turn the volume up and rap every word, we probably can't be friends"
