The House Of Coxhead: Sound Of 2013 (Part 1)

Seeing as though every man and his dog is doing a 'Sound Of 2013' list this year, I thought it was only right that The House Of Coxhead gives you some people to watch out for in the new year, who I believe have all the elements to become stars of the future. The list is 10 acts strong and covers a (quite) diverse range of music, including Hip-Hop, Soul, House & R&B. If you've been a regular visitor of the site over the past 12 months, then you should have heard of all these people, but if you haven't, then make sure you do your research and educate yourselves on their music. Part 1 is below, with Part 2 coming later in the week.

Mikill Pane

Having spent most of 2012 touring, as well as releasing two of the best EPs of the year and getting plays from some of Radio 1's finest, Mikill Pane is the first artist to make the list. For anyone who follows the London-born rapper on Twitter, it is quite clear that is blessed with lyrical worldplay that can be matched by none. However, when you delve into his back catalogue, there is so much more to Mr. Pane - a flawless flow, incredibly unique subject matters and a witty humour that shines through in all of his tracks - one of the most exciting MCs to ever emerge from the UK. You can get 'You Guest It?' HERE and 'Dirty Rider' HERE. Mikill's debut album 'Blame Miss Barclay' is set to be released in the new year.

Sam Smith

Second on the list is London-based singer/songwriter Sam Smith, who many of you may have heard on the infectious Disclosure single 'Latch', which was released earlier this year on PMR Records. Sam was relatively unknown prior to the single, and not much is known about him still, but what we do know is that he has a simply stunning vocal tone, and Disclosure have assured me that he is a serious songwriter. I'm presuming an EP will be on the way in 2013, but for now you can get your copy of 'Latch' HERE.

Joey Bada$$

Joey Bada$$ up next, who's the only American on this list, which is probably a sign of the times and a sign of how much the UK has been flourishing in recent times. Joey is a 17 year old rapper from Brooklyn, New York, and is without doubt the most exciting US artist to emerge from the past 12 months. His debut video 'Survival Tactics' took the internet by storm, and his debut mixtape '1999' followed in a similar vein, with beats from the likes of Dilla, MF Doom & Statik Selektah. Get your copy of the mixtape HERE, and cross your fingers for an album next year - this kid is really special.

Dusky

The first production outfit on the list makes an appearance next, in the form of London-based duo Dusky, who've had a fabulous 2012 and are the perfect example of the current House/Garage/Bass crossover sound that is taking over dancefloors all across the UK. The 'Flo Jam' EP was my favourite solo release of theirs this year, but it's their remix of Cloud 9's classic 'Do You Want Me Baby' that stands out head and shoulders above the rest, and is probably my favourite remix of the year, alongside Disclosure's remix of 'Running'. Pick it up HERE, and be on the look out for more of their work next year - hopefully an album...

John Newman

John Newman is the final act in Part 1 of The House Of Coxhead: Sound Of 2013 list, and is a name that everyone should recognise, mainly due to his breath taking contributions to Rudimental's two hit singles this year, 'Feel The Love' & 'Not Giving In'. John has been putting the work in on the underground music scene for quite some time, but it was the two aforementioned singles that shot him into the spotlight and introduced the world to his husky and anthemic vocals. Without doubt one of my favourite finds of 2012, and cannot wait to hear some more of his solo work.

Part 2 on the way soon...
