WE ARE BACK BABY!!!

Hello, is this thing still on...?

The date is September 6th, 2023... exactly 5,166 days since I started The House of Coxhead.

Earlier today, I just listened to ‘Heavy Heavy’ by Young Fathers for the first time (shocking I know) on my way home from work, and it made me realise how I hate what I’ve become.

I used to do a Top 100 (!!!) list of my favourite albums of the year, and now I barely even listen to 10 in a year.

I don’t dig for new music like I used to… I don’t go on Bandcamp, YouTube or Soundcloud, and fall in love with a random edit that has less than 200 plays.

I, like many other people, draw for familiar playlists of older music. Or listen to the 2 minute streaming edit of a new song on Spotify and then don’t listen to it ever again, even if I like it.

My whole reason for wanting to work in music, was because I loved new music. I loved looking for it, discovering it, writing about it, and sharing it with people. I loved supporting upcoming, or underground artists who didn’t have a voice like others do. And I was actually pretty good at it.

I also read an amazing piece by Derrick Gee last week, where he really made me think about how important it is to still have curators in this world, where most things are played and supported because there’s an agenda with the label, the artist, or a certain platform. Music should be about sharing it because you love it.

Anyway… I might do some stuff on TikTok eventually, and will most probably share some bits on Twitter & Instagram, but for now… I’m just going to write about new music on here as regularly as I can. Not many people may read it in 2023, but that’s okay, it feels really good for my soul.

Below is my favourite song from the Young Fathers album, which is called 'Geronimo' and actually came out 11 months ago. It's got less than 3 million streams on Spotify and it's fucking amazing. Who cares about streams when you're killing it on a sold out tour of the US and are nominated for the Mercury Prize tomorrow night? Not me.

Thanks to Young Fathers and Derrick for the inspiration.

Support the good stuff x
